Katherine Earle Yanes was born in Los Angeles, California. She graduated from Williams College, magna cum laude, with honors in economics, in 1993. In 1997, she graduated from Stetson University College of Law, magna cum laude, as valedictorian of her class. She was an associate member of the STETSON LAW REVIEW. Following law school, Ms. Yanes served as a law clerk to Chief Judge Elizabeth A. Kovachevich, United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida.

Based on peer recognition and professional achievement, FLORIDA SUPER LAWYERS has included Ms. Yanes as a member of the FLORIDA RISING STARS in 2009 and 2010.  In 2010, Ms. Yanes was awarded the Hillsborough Association of Women Lawyers' first President's Award in appreciation of her outstanding service to HAWL.

Ms. Yanes is a member of The Florida Bar, the Hillsborough County Bar Association (Board Member, Trial and Litigation Section, 2009-2010; former Co-Chair, Appellate Practice Section), the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Hillsborough Association of Women Lawyers (Board Member); the American Bar Association (Member, Editorial Board, ABA Criminal Litigation Newsletter, 2007-2009); Second District Court of Appeal Historical Society (Secretary); and The Eleventh Circuit Historical Society. She is also a barrister in the Herbert G. Goldburg Criminal Law American Inns of Court.

Ms. Yanes has participated in criminal appeals including Purvis v. State, 2010 WL 1926816 (Fla. 2d DCA 2010) (denial of post-conviction motion reversed on rehearing); Butts v. State, 975 So. 2d 590, (Fla. 2d DCA 2008) (conviction reversed due to evidentiary error); Behanna v. State, 985 So. 2d 550 (Fla. 2d DCA 2007) (conviction reversed due to evidentiary error); Henrion v. State, 895 So. 2d 1213 (Fla. 2d DCA 2005); Pierce v. State, 873 So. 2d 618 (Fla. 2d DCA 2004); Acker v. State, 787 So. 2d 77 (Fla. 2d DCA 2001); United States v. Gepp, unpublished (11th Cir. 2001); and Veltmann v. Fireman's Fund Insurance Companies, unpublished (11th Cir. 2001).

Ms. Yanes has assisted in civil appeals including Mishkin v. Gurian, 205 Fed. Appx. 856, 2006 WL 2374238 (2d Cir. 2006) (reversing $200 million judgment); Montage Group, Ltd. and Digital Editing Services, Inc. v. Athle-Tech Computer Systems, Inc., 889 So. 2d 180 (Fla. 2d DCA 2004) (court affirmed an award of almost $8 million in breach of contract case); Estate of Canavan v. National Healthcare Corp., et al., 889 So. 2d 825 (Fla. 2d DCA 2005) (won both the main appeal and the cross-appeal on behalf of a victim of nursing home abuse); Smith v. Foremost Insurance Company, 884 So. 2d 341 (Fla. 2d DCA 2004); Perdue Farms Incorporated v. Hook and H&N Foods, Inc., 777 So. 2d 1047 (Fla. 2d DCA 2001).

Ms. Yanes is a co-author of Habeas Corpus, Chapter 10-F, FLORIDA APPELLATE PRACTICE (7th ed. 2010) [co-authored with Stuart C. Markman and original co-author James H. Kynes and it is dedicated to his memory], and co-author of the Second Edition of GRAND JURY LAW AND PRACTICE, a two-volume treatise published by West Group. Her writings include "Glickman v. Wileman Bros. & Elliot, Inc.: Has the Supreme Court Lost its Way?," 27 Stetson Law Review 1461 (1998). She has also co-authored "A Primer on the Coase Theorem: Making Law in a World of Zero Transaction Costs," 11 DePaul Business Law Journal 1 (1998); and "A Unified Theory of Justice: The Integration of Fairness into Efficiency," 73 Washington Law Review 249 (1998), Commentaries on Law & Economics: 1997 Yearbook 248 (Robert W. Rhode ed., 1998).
